Our History
In the Beginning... Founded in Dorset in 1946 by John Farrow and Richard Ball, Farrow & Ball started with a shared passion for creating rich, high-quality colours using original formulations. Farrow, a trained chemist, and Ball, an engineer and WWII POW survivor, launched their endeavor with the support of their wives, Ena Rose and Peggy, who handled accounts and designed the first logo, respectively.
Important Contracts Were Won Supplying paint for the Ford Motor Company, Raleigh Bicycles, the Admiralty, and the War Office, Farrow & Ball quickly made a name for itself.
But Then, the Fire In the late 1960s, a devastating fire led to the relocation of Farrow & Ball to its current home near Wimborne, where we continue to craft our paints and wallpapers.
Our Recipes Remained Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, while other companies turned to acrylic paints, Farrow & Ball maintained its traditional recipes and methods, staying true to our roots.
A Decade of Firsts
- 1994: First independent stockist, Paint & Paper
- 1996: First flagship showroom on Fulham Road, London
- 1997: Began making artisanal wallpapers
- 1999: First overseas showroom in Toronto, followed by Paris and New York, and launched our website
We Went Green In 2010, we transitioned to eco-friendly water-based finishes with low VOC, reaffirming our commitment to environmental responsibility.
Going Digital We embraced the digital world with social media platforms and our online interiors magazine, The Chromologist.
Our Colour Consultancy Goes Global In 2012, we expanded our in-home colour consultancy service globally, offering tailored design advice to transform interiors worldwide.
And Today? Today, with more than 60 showrooms worldwide and a global network of stockists, Farrow & Ball continues to transform homes with its unique colours and finishes, all while remaining true to its Dorset roots.
